Fitzroy Island is situated about 35km Souteast of Cairns. This island used to be part of the Australian mainland. Its covered by eucalyptus and rain forests. The temperatures are about 17 degrees Celsius in winter and up to 32 degrees Celsius in summer. Its inhabitated by huge butterflies, ospreys and cockatoos but the underwater world is also very rich.

This island was discovered by Captain Cook on June 10, 1770 who named it after his Prime Minister Duke Fitzroy of Grafton. Initially Aborigines came here for hunting and the members of the Gunghandji tribe still believe that Gulnyjarubay came to this island and named it Gabara which can be translated with 'fist'. When the Australian freighter Somerset introduced the smallpox to this island in 1877 Fitzroy became a quarantine island. During the same time 3000 Chinese immigrated to North Queensland who were not welcomed by the local settlers and thus sent to Fitzroy as well. After 16 days the Chinese could leave the island again after showing no smallpox symptoms. In 1907 some unwanted Yarrabah Aborigines were sent here to take care of banana and coconut tree plantations. Fitzroy became a natural reservate in 1989.

Nowadays this island is visited by 70.000 people per year who are travelling about an hour from Cairns. A submarine is offering diving trips to the coral gardens of the island but hiking through the rain forest or the beaches is also worth a trip.
